Why this one
Almost every cat owner has the same argument with the same piece of furniture. The cat scratches the sofa. You buy a flat cardboard pad. She ignores it and goes back to the sofa. You buy a six-foot carpeted tower, discover you don't want it in your living room, put it in the spare bedroom — and she goes back to the sofa.
The problem was never that she's badly behaved. Scratching isn't optional for a cat: it sheds old claw sheaths, stretches her back, and marks territory. She has to do it somewhere. The sofa wins because it's the best option in the room she actually lives in.
